Alkaline-Loving Flowers and the Science Behind the Plants

When the pH of the soil is over 7.0, particular plants have changes in their physiological processes. Alkaline conditions alter the ways nutrients move in the soil and change how the plants roots absorb them. However, some flowering plants that have adapted to live in naturally alkaline soil find these chemical properties ideal for optimal growth.

When it is introduced into soil, baking soda will increase the pH and will offer a small amount of sodium. Although lime will shock the plants, less shock will occur when baking soda is used. Instead of making changes that are detrimental to the plants, baking soda will make small positive changes to the soil to help plants that grow best in alkaline conditions.

Hydrangeas (Zones 3-9): One of the favorites of many gardeners, these flowering shrubs even change color as the pH of the soil changes. In more alkaline soils, pink and red hydrangeas are more vivid. **Geraniums (Zones 9-12):** Geraniums bloom from spring to fall. In warm climates, they are perennials, while in colder climates, they are annuals. In neutral to slightly alkaline soil (pH 7.0-7.5), they exhibit their most brilliant reds and pinks, and will bloom more profusely.

Petunias (Annual): These popular bedding plants produce more vigorous stems and flowers when soil pH is between 7.0-7.8. Their more weather-resistant trumpet-shaped blooms also develop at these levels.

Begonias (Zones 9-11): When tuberous and wax begonias are cultivated in alkaline soils, they tend to have greater flowering and improved resistance to diseases. In addition, they exhibit increased shine on their waxy foliage and heightened color intensity in their flowers.

Zinnias (Annual): Zinnias are heat-loving annuals that are able to bloom in alkaline soil. If grown in soil with a pH of 7.0 to 7.5, they will have more brightly colored flower heads and will be more resistant to diseases.

Impatiens (Zones 10-11): Impatiens are often grown as annuals, however, when soil pH is between 7.0-7.4, they will form more robust root systems and will experience more sustained (or continuous) blooming cycles, providing better flowering for heat stress.

Clematis (hardy in zones 4-8) is a lovely climbing plant that prefers alkaline (basic) soils. When sweet clematis and other varieties are grown in soils with a pH of 7.0-8.0, they will produce thicker vines and larger flowers.

The Safe Application Method

Mix a gentle alkaline solution. To prepare the solution, mix one tablespoon of baking soda into two quarts of water. Stir to dissolve completely. Starting with the growing season and then every month, apply the solution around the base of the plants. Avoid contact with the leaves.

Watering your plants helps the soil absorb the solution. Shock to the plants is prevented by this gradual process, and the flowers get the levels of alkalinity they need.

Timing Your Alkaline Boost

Apply in early spring before flower buds start forming. This allows plants to make internal adjustments for nutrient uptake. During the summer applications should be done monthly. Fall applications are not recommended because plants need to get ready for dormancy.

Gardens in containers need you to lessen the strength of the solution by 50% because the potting soils have a lower buffering capacity than garden soils.

Warning Signs to Watch For

If soil demonstrates signs of high alkalinity paired with yellowing leaves, particularly with yellowing leaf veins (indicating iron deficiency), or stunted growth, do not apply soil amendments. Rather, conduct a pH soil test to assess the level of alkalinity.

Most flowers that thrive in alkaline soil grow best with a pH of 7.0–7.8. Above a pH of 8.0, these plants may still experience difficulties with nutrient acquisition.
