Cavities and Dense Cover Make Safer Night Roosts
Hummingbirds pick protected nighttime roosts where they can sleep in relative safety. Many species prefer nesting in trees or shrubs, perching among dense branches and leaves.
Some will hide in small tree cavities. Hummingbirds will sleep in sheltered and secure locations at night, perched on the tips of branches.
They will typically choose to rest in shrubs or on horizontal tree branches, which offer some protection from the elements. They tend to favor deciduous trees such as oak, birch, or poplar and choose their own sheltered spots on tree branches – not resting snuggled up with other birds, but each solitary bird on its own.

A box made for roosting does not have air vents at the top to let out excessive heat which are necessary in a bird house to prevent harm to baby birds by over heating. For a roosting box most of the time it is a positive not to have air vents to keep the body heat produced by the birds trapped inside the box.
Torpor, Shivering, and Cooler Blood in the Feet
Hummingbirds will often enter a form of hibernation known as torpor in cold temperatures.
Torpor is a deep, resting state during which their metabolic rate slows, and their body temperature drops dramatically. Once their heart rate returns to normal, they will begin to vibrate.
