Many of us have experience with parrots and know how intelligent and great they are as social companions. They may even know how to use technology better than us. BirdNote recently reported how researchers predicted parrots would want to “say hi’ to other birds using technology like tablets or cell phone screens. The researchers didn’t want to force the parrots to do it. Each parrot was trained to signal a phone call by ringing a bell. Once a bell was rung, a caretaker would show the bird a screen with pictures of birds to choose from.

How Parrots Connect Through Technology
The outcome was very interesting. Many of the parrots had conversation during the call similar to the interaction of wild birds and their group. Some of the parrots were so excited that they stayed on the call for the maximum time limit of 5 minutes. Most of the birds were engaged during the call and after the call, some of them developed a close friendship and continued calling each other. Video calls could be a great way to stimulate social interaction among birds that are bored in captivity. Sometimes, a bird just needs another bird to socialize with.
